What happens to a dance piece when it gets interpreted by dancers with different genres and movement styles?

(dis)connect! is a dance experiment: 12 dancers create a digital communication chain across spatial distance and stylistic differences.

The procedure for the 8 parts of the chain of communication is almost identical:

A choreography is filmed in public space and sent to the next solo or duo, who interpret and develop it further. The newly created input reaches the next group of artists and serves as a basis for their work. Thus, a chain of 8 links with different dance inputs is created. Communication, interpretation, exploration and creation exclusively takes place in one direction only, there are no possibilities to ask questions to the previous artist/s. The result is open: all participating artists [link to ArtistPage ] work and create freely according to their own ideas and imaginations. Unpredictable developments emerge, new narratives unfold, public spaces are occupied with dance.

Communication happens spontaneously, with current ideas. (dis)connect! creates similar conditions for all participants: the dancers only have 5 days to develop and present their choreography. Working in this short time period requires spontaneity and quick decision making. There is no artistic direction from the outside who could change the artistic creation before it can be presented to an audience. The dance input emerges from the current moment of artistic communication and is presented as such. All participating dancers are dependent on the work of the previous artist/s. They dare to engage in this unpredictable and therefore risky process. Each new choreography is highly influential for the entire creative process. The end result therefore lies in the hands and feet and fantasies of all participating artists.

(dis)connect! believes in experimental, free and processual work.

First impressions of each creation can be found here. At the end of the project, all parts of the chain of dance communication will be published here. In addition, there we will have a live stream with an artist talk, in which we will discuss the artistic process. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions and share your impressions.
